In 2003, triple board-certified Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. Henry Mentz developed a new technique to treat gynecomastia, a condition that causes the excess growth of breast tissue in males. Dr. Mentz found that more than 1/3 of adult males has the condition of gynecomastia or is self-conscious about the size of his breasts. As an expert in liposuction and plastic surgery, Dr. Mentz understands that enlarged breasts are not the product of fatty tissue that can be removed through traditional liposuction. Rather, gynecomastia is caused by firm breast tissue that is much harder to remove. Old techniques for treating the enlarged male breast required a large incision to remove the firm mass of glandular tissue. This left an obvious scar and patients remained self-conscious about removing their shirt. To solve this problem, Dr. Mentz eliminated the large scar by cutting the glandular tissue into strips and removing them through a tiny puncture incision.
"Yes, It's Scary! But my Tummy is Gone and I Look Amazing! - Houston, TX - Dr. Mentz has been wonderful. He gave me full confidence in the look I wanted and in his ability to deliver. I'm on the road to recovery now and can't wait to show off my figure! - - I'm 51, 2 C-Sections and a lot of pounds ago! I had a TT, lipo of flanks, implants REMOVED and breast contoured. Even having the surgery so recently (3/22), I look amazing! Recovery is important. Take it seriously. Yes, it's boring! That's ok! Take it easy anyway. Don't do too much too soon - don't stress about getting life back to "normal"! Not to discount previous services but Mentz services and results are on a much different level in comparison. Trust me! An extremely picky, private athlete and not one to display personal information such as this to the world. From the office visit to the actual place of surgery... Impeccable. So far I'm more than happy!"- H. / RealSelf / Mar 24, 2017

Gynecomastia can range from a small amount of fullness below the nipple to large woman-like breasts. Sometimes this is caused by excess fat stored in that area, which is very simple to remove through liposuction using a small cannula. However, sometimes the enlarged breast is caused by hardened glandular breast tissue that cannot be removed through lipo. In these cases, a small incision is made below the areola, and the grandular tissue is removed the tissue is small pieces. The scar is very small and is well-hidden on the border of the areola (nipple). The procedure can usually be accomplished in approximately 1 hour as an outpatient surgery.
Following your procedure, you will be fitted with a compression garment to reduce bruising and swelling. Most bruising and swelling diminishes within 2 weeks. Recovery usually lasts 5 – 7 days and most men can return to work 3 – 4 days later, though heavy exercise should be postponed for 2 – 3 weeks. For patients who live or are staying within 30 miles of our office, Dr. Mentz can send a plastic surgery nurse to help you in the first days of your recovery. The nurse will change surgical dressings, check your medications, and update Dr. Mentz on the status of your recovery.

Causes of Gynecomastia?
Approximately half of all men have breasts that are enlarged, a condition known as gynecomastia. In most cases the cause is heredity or natural hormone imbalance within the body, though anabolic steroid use can also create this unwanted side effect. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly. Newborns, boys going through puberty, and older men may develop gynecomastia as a result of normal changes in hormone levels, though other causes also exist. Men and boys with gynecomastia sometimes have pain in their breasts and may feel embarrassed by their appearance.
With Pectoral Etching?
Many men choose to combine a gynecomastia procedure with Pectoral Etching, a liposuction technique Dr. Mentz developed to give the chest a more athletic appearance. In a Pectoral Etching procedure, Dr. Mentz uses a detailed liposuction technique to outline the pectoralis muscle and axilla in order to reveal the muscular contours of the male chest. His combination of Pectoral Etching and puncture gynecomastia removal is successful in reducing the feminine breast roundness and restoring a masculine, angular quality of the natural muscle.
“Early techniques tended to make the chest flat and juvenile in appearance, so I developed Pectoral Etching to outline the pectoral perimeter and enhance the muscular contour,” says Mentz.
Why Dr. Mentz?
Because 50% of the breast is composed of fat, Dr. Mentz is sometimes able to reduce its size through liposuction alone. However, it is usually necessary to remove excess glandular tissue as well, which cannot be done with traditional liposuction. Dr. Mentz accomplishes this using an innovative puncture removal technique he developed in 2003. This technique allows him remove glandular material through a very small entry site, which leaves behind a scar that is almost undetectable. For more than a decade, Dr. Henry Mentz has consistently achieved excellent results and a high satisfaction rate with his method of treating gynecomastia.
